It was September of 1987 when Pope John Paul traveled to Arizona and held an evening Mass for more than 75,000 people at Sun Devil Stadium as part of his tour in the United States. It was the first and only time a Pope has ever visited Arizona. Arizona State University allegedly charged almost $200,000 for the pontiff’s use of its Sun Devil Stadium. All logos of the University’s mascot “Sparky the Sun Devil” along with his pitchfork had to be covered throughout the stadium in order for the Pope to agree to enter the stadium.
