San Bernandino, California – The Golden Arches of McDonald’s first appeared in 1948, when brothers Maurice and Richard McDonald piloted their new fast food concept in San Bernardino, California. The brothers’ innovations included a self-serve counter, an assembly line, and pre-making items that were kept warm under heat lamps, all with the aim of serving food more quickly and cheaply.


He visited the McDonald brothers in 1954 which led to him becoming their franchise agent. He opened up the first restaurant for McDonald’s System, Inc., a predecessor of McDonald’s Corp. in Des Plaines, Illinois in April, 1955. McDonald’s acquired the rights to the brother’s company in 1961 for $2.7 million.


Seeing great promise in their restaurant concept, Kroc offered to begin a franchise program for the McDonald brothers. On April 15, 1955, he opened the first McDonald’s franchise in Des Plaines, Illinois, and in the same year launched the McDonald’s Corporation, eventually buying out the McDonald brothers in 1961.The number of McDonald’s outlets would top 1,000 before the end of the decade.
